Freestanding bathtub: how to plan space, taps and drain for Torino

A freestanding bathtub needs a little more planning than a built-in one. Space around it, tap, drain and floor: everything to check before choosing Torino.

Torino, Freestanding oval acrylic bathtub with two backrests

A freestanding bathtub is the centrepiece of a bathroom. Torino is an oval bathtub in seamless sanitary acrylic, 168 × 80 cm and 58 cm high, with two backrests. Before choosing it, four points deserve attention: space, tap, drain and floor.

How much space around it?

Torino is visible from every side, so it needs room to breathe. Leave enough free space around the tub to reach it and clean it on every side, and to walk past comfortably. It can stand in the middle of the room, in front of a window or along a wall. If the room is too narrow for free space on both long sides, the back-to-wall Torino Muro keeps the same look against the wall.

Choose the tap early

The tap determines the plumbing work, so it must be chosen before the floor and walls are finished. Two solutions work with Torino:

  • a floor-standing bath mixer next to the tub, with pipes coming through the floor; this is the classic choice for a tub in the middle of the room
  • a wall-mounted tap, if the tub stands close to a wall

The tap is not included, so you choose the model and the finish freely.

The drain

Torino has a central waste with overflow, included. The drain pipe arrives under the centre of the tub. Check its position before laying the floor, and plan access to the trap for future maintenance.

The floor and the access path

A filled bathtub with a person in it is heavy. On an upper floor or a timber floor, have the floor's capacity checked. Also measure the access path: the bathtub must pass through doors, corridors and stairs to reach the bathroom.

Why acrylic?

Sanitary acrylic is warm to the touch, lighter than stone resin or cast iron, and easy to clean. Torino is made without joints, so there is nowhere for dirt to collect. Clean it with a soft cloth and a mild product, and avoid abrasive powders and solvents.

Bathing for two

With a backrest at each end and a central waste, Torino can be used facing either end, or shared.
